Temple Jeremiah loves Whittier!!!

A brief and incomplete history of Whittier and Temple Jeremiah’s partnership:  Since 2004, members of Temple Jeremiah have been giving a little help to support the kiddos and staff at Whittier. We’ve partnered on numerous programs such as:

  • 3R’s Coaches - We provide support to the teachers in the classroom, mostly helping the kids with their reading skills, also writing and some math. Coaches are assigned a classroom for the school year (and sometimes for 14 school years!) Typically coaches come one morning or afternoon per week.
  • Used school supply collection
    • Congregants were asked to save their children’s gently-used school supplies to donate to Whittier at the end of each school year.   Volunteers participate in sorting the collection, which was then delivered to Whittier over each summer.
    • For the past few years, instead, we’ve donated new specific items, and last year we put together boxes of items that kids seem to start school without for each classroom and Encore classroom.
  • Uniform donation – When uniforms were required, each August we asked congregants to donate new uniform clothing.  The collection was sorted and delivered to Whittier.
  • Winter coat, etc. collection – Our families collect gently-used winter coats, hats, mittens, boots and snow pants to allow Whittier to have a storeroom of winter items so that when a child is identified to need warm winter outerwear, it can be provided.
  • Box Tops for Education Collection – before they became digital, Temple Jeremiah members collected Box Tops for Education points for Whittier.
  • At the beginning of COVID, we supplied 480 whiteboards, dry erase markers and erasers so the teachers could better see the kids’ work remotely.
